URBAN OASIS, AMAZING VIEWS

This is a home with many surprises and lots of magic. It has layers of bonus spaces both indoors and out, and spectacular outlooks from multiple viewpoints.

From the street, it has a handsome presence - strong lines accented with lovely landscaping - that makes a good first impression. Upon entering into the large, open living room, more of its fantastic personality emerges. The spacious room, the gas fireplace and the huge picture window framing a panoramic view sets a dramatic scene. Looking out over the winding street and the homes below gives a sense of being in the Hollywood Hills, and the subtle bohemian spirit inside and out is one of this home’s best features.

The living room flows easily to the dining room, which has French doors opening onto a private redwood deck. The kitchen and breakfast nook have light from all sides: windows at the back, two sliding glass doors on either side and skylights above. A Viking range, two sinks, granite counters, a built-in pantry and laundry space are some of the amenities that make this house feel customized. The sliding doors in the nook lead to separate private patios.

Off the dining room is a hall with two bedrooms and a bathroom. One of the rooms has a gas stove and a door to the herb garden deck and the other has a gas fireplace and a fabulous view of the Bay. The bathroom between them has been nicely updated in a vintage style.

Downstairs is a lavish suite with a separate entrance, perfect as an in-law apartment or au pair quarters. It includes a living room with the same spectacular view as above, a full kitchen, a master bedroom and a cozy, grotto-like bathroom. A glass pane door accesses a private deck, and on the lower level is an office space (or art studio, workout room or private den), and lots of storage.

The outside space is truly inspiring, with an expansive terraced backyard, reminiscent of a private garden retreat. A wraparound deck leads out to a slate platform with an outdoor fireplace that enjoys the amazing view of Oakland, the Bay, the San Francisco skyline, three bridges, Mt. Tam and the peninsula. Steps up there is another quiet patio, and through the garden shed is one more deck under the redwoods that also features the fantastic vista. This yard is both a serene and private hideaway and the perfect place for easy get-togethers; it is an urban sanctuary for enjoyment in all seasons.

The adjacent lot which serves as the side yard has a flat stretch of lawn, overlooking another garden area with raised beds for flowers, vegetables or herbs, and is shaded by olive, fig and lemon trees.

This gem is tucked in the neighborhood of Millsmont, in the foothills of Oakland, near Mills College, in Oakland's "warm belt," offering a temperate climate year round. Conveniently located near Highways 13 and 580, commuting is especially easy. Staying home and enjoying the view, the yard and this charming house is even easier.

Neighborhood

Millsmont

Millsmont is a neighborhood in the Oakland foothills, just to the south and east of the Mills College Campus. Since the neighborhood is on an upslope, many homes have wide views of the Bay, San Francisco, and bridges. It is an eclectic mix of homes - originally most of the homes built there were 1 bedroom getaway bungalows in the early 1900s. At that time, the area was heavily wooded, making it an ideal place to build a refuge from the bustle of San Francisco. Quarter acre plots and building materials were sold for $500 at the time. After the earthquake and fire of San Francisco, many displaced San Franciscans moved into their little bungalows - some of them added on to their homes to make them more accommodating for long term living. The original homes started getting replaced with larger structures, the beginning of the process which led to the mix of homes seen in the neighborhood today.

Millsmont is a convenient neighborhood despite the feeling that you are away in the hills, with easy access to the 580 Freeway. The amenities of the Bancroft Business Center (groceries, pharmacy, eateries) and the delights of the Laurel commercial district are nearby. The extensive network of hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails in the Oakland hills is just a short drive up the hill. The beautiful Mills College campus, with its state of the art aquatic facility, two private schools (Julia Morgan School, a middle school for young women, and the Mills College Children’s School, a co-ed primary school adjacent to the Mills College School of Education.

Close to transportation, hiking, biking and horseback riding trails, Millsmont is a neighborhood full of conveniences.
